Starting an "Adult" Family Conversation

HSFPP Stories of Impact

by Mandy Farrow, Business Instructor, Mapleton, Minn.

I knew the course was getting through to my students when an eleventh grader was telling me about the long talk she had with her mom about student loans and credit card debt. As a family, they had never discussed finances.

My student realized that she didn't know much about her family's current finances, how much financial help she could expect for college, or anything about her parents' financial history. She learned that her mom experienced some debt problems in early adulthood and that her mom had learned some great financial lessons to pass on.

This student mentioned that she had never had such an intense adult conversation with her mom, and that our class had given her the language and knowledge to get the conversation started. .
