Uncovering Implicit Values of Different Job Opportunities

HSFPP Stories of Impact

"One of the best HSFPP lessons involves the comparison of job benefits. We had already done background regarding taxes, and I took the opportunity to cover the pre-tax and post-tax deduction possibilities offered with your program lesson.

After discussing financial opportunities explicitly available with different jobs, students then looked at the implicit values gained/lost for the extras like travel time, cost of licenses/qualifications, and having to work weekends.

Throughout the lessons, students continued to chat on their own as to which part they valued about the job situations we were covering.  At the end of this topic, students identified which job between two options they would pick and why.

In their journal responses about this activity, students said they often don’t think about the implicit values of the job market, and how they now know what to look for because they have identified the values that matter most to them."
